A mortgage choice wizard, built at InterPlein in 1999.

Choosing a mortgage means holding a dozen variables in your head at once and understanding how they pull against each other. A wizard takes that apart: one question at a time, in an order that makes sense, with help available where people actually get stuck. What comes out the far end is a recommendation someone can act on.

Design by Maaike de Laat. Dirk was involved from beginning to end on the build, as on most of the sites there: the programming and the modules underneath.

To get hold of the choices the wizard had to make, he drew the whole thing as a diagram in Excel and worked from a printout of about thirty pages. It came out well. The site was never launched.

What brings you here?

It only changes what this site puts first. You can change it later, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Settings

No account, no server. Stored in this browser only, and gone when you clear your site data.

Appearance

This site is dark by default. Light and matching your device are both choices.

Text size

Scales the whole page, not just the body copy.

Motion

The home page has a field of cells that light under the pointer. By default this follows your system setting, which on most Windows machines means no trail.

What brings you here

Changes which menu items are on, and what comes first. Every page stays reachable by link and by address whichever you pick.
